What is a Criminal Charge?

A criminal charge alleges that a person has committed an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada or related federal legislation. Convictions can result in a criminal record, fines, probation, driving prohibitions and, in some cases, jail.

Types of Criminal Matters

Bail

Release and detention hearings after arrest.

Trials & Preliminary Inquiries

Hearings where witnesses testify and a judge (or judge and jury) decides whether the Crown has proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sentencing & Reviews

Sentencing hearings, probation variations, review hearings and other post-verdict matters.

Virtual Court & Disclosure Tips

  • Log in to the virtual courtroom at least 15 minutes early.
  • Use your full legal name and keep your camera and microphone available unless told otherwise.
  • Do not record or stream court. Recording is prohibited under the Courts of Justice Act.
  • Request disclosure from the Crown as early as possible so you have time to review it with your lawyer.

10 Armoury is the main Toronto Ontario Court of Justice (criminal) courthouse for many downtown Toronto Police Service divisions. Always confirm your courtroom, court time and whether you are in person or on Zoom using your paperwork, duty counsel or the Crown.

Toronto Duty Counsel – 10 Armoury: Duty counsel can assist with criminal and youth matters, guilty pleas, adjournments and other in-court issues.

Typical phone menu options for the duty counsel office:

  • Press 1 for youth duty counsel
  • Press 3 for duty counsel assisting adults appearing in court that day or the next
  • Press 4 for duty counsel assisting clients appearing in court 2 or more days away
  • Press 5 for any other matters

Crown Attorney’s Office – Main Line: 416-212-2707

The Toronto Crown Attorney’s Office at 10 Armoury is organized into geographic teams based on Toronto Police Service divisions. Always include your court date, courtroom, police division and information number when you email the Crown.

Practice tip: Do not email the Crown about your case without speaking to a lawyer. What you send the Crown can affect how your case is resolved.

10 Armoury runs a mix of first appearance, case management, remand, trial and plea courts. Your release documents or court notice will list your courtroom number and appearance time. Arrive early, bring all court documents and ID, and confirm with duty counsel or the Crown whether your matter is in person or on Zoom.
