The Provincial Offences Act (POA) covers non-criminal offences such as Highway Traffic Act tickets, municipal by-laws, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Labour and other regulatory matters. These charges can carry fines, demerit points, licence suspensions and in some cases jail.
Types of POA Matters
Part I — Tickets / Notices
Regular tickets and offence notices (speeding, careless, stunt, etc.).
Part II — Parking
Parking and city by-law tickets, usually handled by the municipality.
Part III — Summons
More serious charges where you receive a summons and must attend court on a specific date.
